Edwin Epps:
Well, boy. I understand I've got a larned nigger that writes letters and tries to get white fellows to mail 'em. Well, Armsby tol' me today the devil was among my niggers. That I had one that needed close watchin' or he would run away. When I axed him why, he said you come over to him and waked him up in the middle of the night and wanted him to carry a letter to Marksville. What have yah got to say to that?Solomon Northup:There is no truth in it.Edwin Epps:You say.Solomon Northup:How could I write a letter without ink or paper? There is nobody I want to write to 'cause I hain't got no friends living as I know of. That Armsby is a lying drunken fellow. You know this, just as you know that I am constant in truth. Now, master, I can see what that Armsby is after, plain enough. Didn't he want you to hire him for an overseer? That's it. He wants to make you believe we're all going to run away and then he thinks you'll hire an overseer to watch us. He believes you are soft soap. He's given to such talk. I believe he's just made this story out of whole cloth, 'cause he wants to get a situation. It's all a lie, master, you may depend on't. It's all a lie.Edwin Epps: I'll be damned... Well boy
00:00:02.096 --> 00:00:07.807
I understand I got a learned nigger that writes letters
00:00:08.883 --> 00:00:11.978
Tries to get white fellas to mail them
00:00:18.309 --> 00:00:20.983
Armsby told me today
00:00:21.145 --> 00:00:23.648
the devil was among my niggers
00:00:25.316 --> 00:00:28.286
That I had one that needed watching
00:00:28.444 --> 00:00:30.788
or he would run away
00:00:32.074 --> 00:00:34.617
When I asked him why
00:00:35.492 --> 00:00:38.996
he said you come over to him
00:00:39.163 --> 00:00:42.979
waked him up in the middle of the night
00:00:42.166 --> 00:00:44.084
and wanted him to carry a letter
00:00:46.999 --> 00:00:47.838
to Marksville
00:00:52.927 --> 00:00:55.035
What do you got to say to that
00:00:58.014 --> 00:00:59.938
There's no truth to it
00:01:00.851 --> 00:01:02.353
You say
00:01:04.001 --> 00:01:06.999
How could I write a letter without ink or paper
00:01:07.983 --> 00:01:11.999
Who am I gonna write to I got no friends living as I know of
00:01:12.613 --> 00:01:14.286
That Armsby
00:01:15.699 --> 00:01:19.203
That Armsby is a lying drunken fellow
00:01:21.997 --> 00:01:23.962
Didn't he want you to hire him as an overseer
00:01:25.834 --> 00:01:27.461
Well that's it
00:01:28.837 --> 00:01:31.997
He wants to make you believe we're all gonna run away
00:01:31.002 --> 00:01:33.551
so you'll hire him as an overseer
00:01:34.999 --> 00:01:37.438
He believes you're a soft soap
00:01:38.001 --> 00:01:40.774
And he's given to such talk
00:01:41.999 --> 00:01:45.001
Made this story out of whole cloth
00:01:45.938 --> 00:01:48.282
because he wants a situation
00:01:53.999 --> 00:01:56.119
It's all a lie Master
00:02:01.578 --> 00:02:03.058
It's all a lie
00:02:11.755 --> 00:02:13.001
I'll be damned
00:02:19.001 --> 00:02:22.999
