I used the broad approach when I first went up
to the police precinct and asked one of the detectives
if they knew such a gang leader. And they said,
"Yeah, we know plenty of them, but none of them gonna
let you photograph them." While I was in the precinct,
a young man walked in, and he literally cursed
the desk sergeant out
about something. And so I said
to my detective friend,
"Who is that guy?" He said, "That is
the most notorious gang leader
in all of Harlem." His name was Red Jackson. I told him
I was from LIFE magazine. I want to do a story on him,
very bluntly, you know. That's the way I got
into that story
