was called upon at moments of national commemoration
and crisis. She never said very much, but she was always there
to give witness to what had gone before and to hear the pain. What was perhaps underestimated
was the personal toll it took upon her. When a coal tip collapsed
in the Welsh mining village of Aberfan in 1966, it engulfed a row of houses
and an infant school. Of 144 people who died,
116 were children
