we had a place to call our own. It was exciting
and I loved every minute of it. I had never seen so many gay men
in one place at one time. It didn't matter how butch
you wanted to be, or as mad and dragged up
and camp as Christmas, you could be yourself. But the reality was,
the moment you left Heaven, you could be arrested
for holding hands or kissing. Convictions for gross indecency
had more than tripled in the 15 years since homosexuality
had been decriminalised. Which meant for most gay men,
their formative years were ones of subterfuge
and avoiding arrest
