It had been ten years
since Terry Higgins had collapsed in Heaven nightclub and become one of the first
British casualties of Aids. It's thought that just one
white blood cell like this, infected with HIV, can pass on Aids. Thousands of viruses bud off
the surface of each infected cell, spreading the deadly infection
around the body. Confirmed cases from Aids
in the UK had risen from just a handful of isolated
patients to 7,500 people, and more than 80% of them
had already died. MUSIC: Newsnight Theme
