and months still lay ahead, that Christmas somehow marked the beginning
of a change on Leyte. For one thing, our subs
were coming in regularly now, bringing with them guns
and all manner of supplies. For another,
our guerrilla armies were going
on the offensive everywhere. Big things, we knew,
were in the wind, but as to when
MacArthur would return, well, that was a big a question
