It's a possibility actually suggested
by Serpent Mound's unique alignment. You see, it isn't quite perfect. Today the summer solstice Sun,
as viewed from Serpent Mound, actually sets about two degrees
off the exact center of the jaws. Seems close enough to the naked eye. But it's hard to believe that the people
who conceived of and created this sophisticated effigy mound,
tracking all those calendar moments, would go to all this trouble
and not get it exactly right. I think they did get it right. It all has to do with the way the Earth
shifts on its axis over the millennia. In a phenomenon long known to astronomers who refer to it as
the obliquity of the ecliptic. To put it in simple terms, the Earth, as we know,
is tilted on its axis, but that tilt is not fixed and constant

You see, it isn't quite perfect.
00:00:10.706 --> 00:00:14.012
Today the summer solstice Sun,
as viewed from Serpent Mound,
00:00:14.197 --> 00:00:18.148
actually sets about two degrees
off the exact center of the jaws.
00:00:19.026 --> 00:00:21.217
Seems close enough to the naked eye.
00:00:23.001 --> 00:00:27.163
But it's hard to believe that the people
who conceived of and created
00:00:27.024 --> 00:00:31.153
this sophisticated effigy mound,
tracking all those calendar moments,
00:00:31.766 --> 00:00:35.564
would go to all this trouble
and not get it exactly right.
00:00:37.214 --> 00:00:39.003
I think they did get it right.

It all has to do with the way the Earth
shifts on its axis over the millennia.
00:00:46.003 --> 00:00:48.415
In a phenomenon long known to astronomers
00:00:48.991 --> 00:00:52.136
who refer to it as
the obliquity of the ecliptic.
00:00:53.002 --> 00:00:54.361
To put it in simple terms,
00:00:54.438 --> 00:00:56.548
the Earth, as we know,
is tilted on its axis,
00:00:56.625 --> 00:00:58.085
but that tilt is not fixed and constant.
