It's not a regular self-portrait that artists usually do, but this is like
kind of Halloween-ish. They're not easy pictures
to look at, I will say. There are some where the colours
really have a ghastly look to them where he looks beyond death. But I think it's hard
not to see them as death masks. He looks sort of spectral, you know, in the way his face sort of glows
and the wig sort of spikes out. He accentuates his sunken cheeks, which are not necessarily
because he was sick, but he makes these pictures
that make himself look like possibly an Aids victim
or someone who's about to die. Now, it's important to remember,
he didn't have AIDS. If he'd had AIDS,
it would have made perfect sense cos he would have known
it was close to a death sentence. When I see these pictures, I always think
Warhol emptied himself out
