I think Simon Schama is absolutely
right in his film when, you know, he is more dramatic, I think,
than some of the others. He's more forceful in the horrors -
both do with the slavery at the time, but also, kind of,
ordinary people's lives. I think he's right to do that,
because I think otherwise, we end up getting ourselves into
a bit, sort of, like, the tea-towel Turner territory. I mean, he has that great line
that, you know, "Turner's as British
as a cup of tea". And I think, if we let Turner become
the person we only think about in terms of postcards and gift
shops, and tea towels and, kind of, lovely images of things, I think that does a big disservice
to Turner, actually

I think Simon Schama is absolutely
right in his film when, you know,
00:00:06.004 --> 00:00:08.092
he is more dramatic, I think,
than some of the others.
00:00:08.092 --> 00:00:12.004
He's more forceful in the horrors -
both do with the slavery at
00:00:12.004 --> 00:00:15.006
the time, but also, kind of,
ordinary people's lives.
00:00:15.006 --> 00:00:19.056
I think he's right to do that,
because I think otherwise,
00:00:19.056 --> 00:00:23.998
we end up getting ourselves into
a bit, sort of, like,
00:00:23.998 --> 00:00:24.072
the tea-towel Turner territory.
00:00:24.072 --> 00:00:26.068
I mean, he has that great line
that, you know,
00:00:26.068 --> 00:00:28.052
"Turner's as British
as a cup of tea".
00:00:28.052 --> 00:00:34.006
And I think, if we let Turner become
the person we only think about
00:00:34.006 --> 00:00:37.076
in terms of postcards and gift
shops, and tea towels and, kind of,
00:00:37.076 --> 00:00:39.998
lovely images of things,
00:00:39.998 --> 00:00:41.088
I think that does a big disservice
to Turner, actually.
