I think Simon's making a really
interesting point here, which speaks to this idea that Monet was not
just, as Cezanne called him, "only an eye, but, good Lord,
what an eye". He was actually a brilliant
thinker, too. I think he's doing the impossible. I think he's setting out to show us
time and he's managed to do that. He's managing to paint
the fourth dimension. The artist was in his 60s
as the 20th century began, and he was once again ready
to change course and wrestle with
his final artistic obsession. Monet was now the undisputed
leader of French painting and, as he entered his old age,
it was his water garden that began to dominate his work, with the flamboyant, imported water
lilies that peppered it. The horizon also vanished
from his work and, during this time, he created some of the most
radical art of his lifetime
