In this hugely ambitious,
swelling seascape, he gave himself the extra challenge
of setting the painting at night. I think Fishermen at Sea really
took everybody by surprise. Suddenly, out of nowhere,
you have someone exhibiting this... ..very big, very dramatic, very ambitious painting in oil. I mean, I think it's kind
of flabbergasting. Straight away, Turner is
staking his claim, marking out his path as
a landscape artist, as a marine painter, as somebody who is very accomplished
at painting light effects. It's absolutely about him saying,
as an artist, "I want to play with the big boys. "I'm going to go all out." Film-makers have often tried
to bring art to life by sending presenters off
to exotic places. But not so Tim Marlow, who,
wrapped up against the elements, arrives in a stormy Isle of Wight in search of the view that was the
inspiration for Fishermen at Sea

In this hugely ambitious,
swelling seascape,

he gave himself the extra challenge
of setting the painting at night.
00:00:08.008 --> 00:00:12.008
I think Fishermen at Sea really
took everybody by surprise.
00:00:12.008 --> 00:00:18.002
Suddenly, out of nowhere,
you have someone exhibiting this...
00:00:18.002 --> 00:00:20.028
..very big, very dramatic,
00:00:20.028 --> 00:00:22.028
very ambitious painting in oil.
00:00:22.028 --> 00:00:24.064
I mean, I think it's kind
of flabbergasting.
00:00:24.064 --> 00:00:26.088
Straight away, Turner is
staking his claim,
00:00:26.088 --> 00:00:30.056
marking out his path as
a landscape artist,
00:00:30.056 --> 00:00:32.024
as a marine painter,
00:00:32.024 --> 00:00:36.092
as somebody who is very accomplished
at painting light effects.
00:00:36.092 --> 00:00:39.072
It's absolutely about him saying,
as an artist,
00:00:39.072 --> 00:00:42.016
"I want to play with the big boys.
00:00:42.016 --> 00:00:44.998
"I'm going to go all out."
00:00:44.998 --> 00:00:46.076
Film-makers have often tried
to bring art to life
00:00:46.076 --> 00:00:49.068
by sending presenters off
to exotic places.
00:00:49.068 --> 00:00:53.032
But not so Tim Marlow, who,
wrapped up against the elements,
00:00:53.032 --> 00:00:55.004
arrives in a stormy Isle of Wight
00:00:55.004 --> 00:00:59.052
in search of the view that was the
inspiration for Fishermen at Sea.
