In the last decade,
film-makers have increasingly turned to personal primary sources. In Painted With Words, Alan Yentob
used the letters of both van Gogh and Gauguin
to conjure their voices... ..and, in an early TV role, cast
Benedict Cumberbatch as Vincent. In his steady hands, the relationship looks very
different, and not so one-sided. Gauguin, in spite of himself... HE CHUCKLES ..and in spite of me... ..has proved to me a little it was
time to change things a bit. I'm now working from memory. And all my earlier studies will
still be useful for that work, as they will remind me of
former things that I have seen

In the last decade,
film-makers have increasingly
00:00:03.068 --> 00:00:06.016
turned to personal primary sources.
00:00:07.064 --> 00:00:11.012
In Painted With Words, Alan Yentob
used the letters of both
00:00:11.012 --> 00:00:14.048
van Gogh and Gauguin
to conjure their voices...
00:00:16.048 --> 00:00:21.016
..and, in an early TV role, cast
Benedict Cumberbatch as Vincent.

Gauguin, in spite of himself...
00:00:34.048 --> 00:00:36.028
HE CHUCKLES
00:00:34.048 --> 00:00:36.028
..and in spite of me...
00:00:37.084 --> 00:00:43.024

I'm now working from memory.
00:00:46.028 --> 00:00:49.068
And all my earlier studies will
still be useful for that work,
00:00:49.068 --> 00:00:55.068
as they will remind me of
former things that I have seen.
