The guns could be heard in Giverny, only a short distance from
the front, and soldiers on their way
to and from the trenches passed through the village. Stubborn as ever, Monet refused to leave his home, saying he would rather die in front
of his paintings. With the world
in turmoil around him, he retreated to his studio. Monet's own son, Michel, answered
the call to join the fight. When he's here at home,
working on these paintings, he's terribly worried. As he writes in one letter, he says,
"How could I possibly be involved "with such mundane matters
as a choice of colour, or brushwork, "when people are dying
for this country?" And that's when we look at
these water lily paintings, we have to realise that they are
imbued with the terrors and the traumas of that moment

The guns could be heard in Giverny,
00:00:03.012 --> 00:00:05.004
only a short distance from
the front,
00:00:05.004 --> 00:00:08.064
and soldiers on their way
to and from the trenches passed
00:00:08.064 --> 00:00:10.012
through the village.
00:00:10.012 --> 00:00:11.036
Stubborn as ever,
00:00:11.036 --> 00:00:13.056
Monet refused to leave his home,
00:00:13.056 --> 00:00:16.064
saying he would rather die in front
of his paintings.
00:00:16.064 --> 00:00:18.092
With the world
in turmoil around him,
00:00:18.092 --> 00:00:20.092
he retreated to his studio.
00:00:22.012 --> 00:00:26.032
Monet's own son, Michel, answered
the call to join the fight.
00:00:26.032 --> 00:00:28.064
When he's here at home,
working on these paintings,
00:00:28.064 --> 00:00:30.016
he's terribly worried.
00:00:30.016 --> 00:00:34.016
As he writes in one letter, he says,
"How could I possibly be involved
00:00:34.016 --> 00:00:38.002
"with such mundane matters
as a choice of colour, or brushwork,
00:00:38.002 --> 00:00:41.028
"when people are dying
for this country?"
00:00:41.028 --> 00:00:44.044
And that's when we look at
these water lily paintings,
00:00:44.044 --> 00:00:47.096
we have to realise that they are
imbued with the terrors
00:00:47.096 --> 00:00:50.024
and the traumas of that moment.
