When the Orangerie opened in 1927,
it was a failure. In fact, in the 1930s,
the French government wanted to take the paintings off the wall. Monet's late work, the marvellous
pictures in the show, were completely disregarded. He was out of sync with the tenor
of his time. Monet and Impressionism
were now passe. For years, the Grandes Decorations
were neglected. The gallery roof leaked after World
War II bombings on Paris and shrapnel was even lodged
into one of the canvases
