Something wrong with the clip?
Quote
Miss Franny:
Now, one hot Thursday, way back then, I was sittin' here in the library, and all the doors and windows were wide open. And I had my nose in a book until I noticed a very peculiar smell. A very strong smell. And I raised my eyes up slowly and standing right in front of me was a bear.
[flashback shows a bear roaring]
Miss Franny:
A very large bear.
Opal:
How large was it?
Miss Franny:
At least four times the size of your dog.
Opal:
That big? Wow. Then what happened?
Miss Franny:
I very slowly
[grabs a book]
Miss Franny:
and very carefully raised up the book I was reading.
Opal:
What book was that?
Miss Franny:
War and Peace. And I carefully aimed it, and I threw it right at him! Be gone!
[the book was thrown towards the bear. Winn-Dixie barks]
Miss Franny:
[she laughs]
Good dog. Thank you.
[Winn-Dixie barks happily]
Miss Franny:
And do you know what?
Opal:
No, ma'am. What?
Miss Franny:
This is why I will never forget. He took the book with him.
Opal:
Nuh uh.
Miss Franny:
Yes, ma'am, he snatched it up and ran off.
[the bear grabs the book and leaves the library]
Opal:
Did he ever come back?
Miss Franny:
No. I never saw him again. Well, the men in town, they used to tease me about it. They used to say "Miss Franny, we saw that bear of yours out in the woods today." "He was reading War and Peace and said it sure was good, and he'd like to check it out again."
[the bear was raising his left paw while reading War and Peace]
Miss Franny:
Ah, I imagine I'm the only one who even recalls that bear.

00:00:03.000 --> 00:00:05.867
Now, one hot Thursday,
way back then,
00:00:05.969 --> 00:00:07.869
I was sittin' here
in the library,
00:00:07.971 --> 00:00:10.462
and all the doors and windows
were wide open.
00:00:10.574 --> 00:00:12.735
And I had my nose in a book
00:00:12.843 --> 00:00:16.802
until I noticed
a very peculiar smell.
00:00:16.913 --> 00:00:20.974
A very strong smell.
00:00:21.084 --> 00:00:24.144
And I raised
my eyes up slowly
00:00:24.254 --> 00:00:28.035
and standing
right in front of me was a bear.
00:00:28.458 --> 00:00:30.221
- (roaring)
- A very large bear.
00:00:30.327 --> 00:00:31.919
How large was it?
00:00:32.003 --> 00:00:34.657
At least four times
00:00:34.765 --> 00:00:36.013
the size of your dog.
00:00:36.233 --> 00:00:38.667
That big?
00:00:38.769 --> 00:00:40.794
Wow.
00:00:40.904 --> 00:00:42.394
Then what happened?
00:00:42.506 --> 00:00:45.964
I very slowly
00:00:46.001 --> 00:00:50.274
and very carefully raised up
the book I was reading.
00:00:50.038 --> 00:00:51.087
What book was that?
00:00:51.982 --> 00:00:53.002
War and Peace.
00:00:53.116 --> 00:00:56.381
And I carefully aimed it,
and I threw it
00:00:56.486 --> 00:00:57.783
right at him!
00:00:57.888 --> 00:00:59.515
- Be gone!
- (Winn-Dixie barks)
00:00:59.623 --> 00:01:00.612
(laughs)
00:01:00.724 --> 00:01:01.952
Good dog.
00:01:02.997 --> 00:01:03.039
Thank you.
00:01:03.493 --> 00:01:05.012
(barks happily)
00:01:05.999 --> 00:01:07.006
And do you know what?
00:01:07.013 --> 00:01:08.324
No, ma'am. What?
00:01:08.432 --> 00:01:10.923
This is why I will never forget.
00:01:11.006 --> 00:01:14.697
He took the book with him.
00:01:14.001 --> 00:01:15.863
Nuh-uh.
00:01:15.999 --> 00:01:17.999
Yes, ma'am,
he snatched it up
00:01:17.001 --> 00:01:19.001
and ran off.
00:01:19.142 --> 00:01:20.001
(bear snorts)
00:01:20.061 --> 00:01:22.544
Did he ever come back?
00:01:22.646 --> 00:01:23.874
No.
00:01:23.098 --> 00:01:26.001
I never saw him again.
00:01:26.383 --> 00:01:28.908
Well, the men in town,
they used to tease me about it.
00:01:29.005 --> 00:01:30.999
They used to say, "Miss Franny,
00:01:30.999 --> 00:01:33.446
"we saw that bear of yours
out in the woods today.
00:01:33.557 --> 00:01:35.354
"He was reading
War and Peace
00:01:35.459 --> 00:01:36.858
"and said it sure was good,
00:01:36.999 --> 00:01:39.003
and he'd like
to check it out again. '
00:01:39.196 --> 00:01:41.221
(bear snorts)
00:01:41.331 --> 00:01:42.798
(chuckles)
00:01:42.899 --> 00:01:47.001
Ah, I imagine I'm the only one
who even recalls that bear.
00:01:47.404 --> 00:01:49.998
(whines)
00:01:49.172 --> 00:01:51.064
You don't have a husband
or children?
00:01:51.742 --> 00:01:54.037
Mm, I never married.
00:01:54.999 --> 00:01:55.706
Why not?
00:01:56.999 --> 00:01:59.001
I didn't have the need.
00:01:59.001 --> 00:02:02.408
But you don't have anyone.
00:02:02.001 --> 00:02:04.919
I have these books.
00:02:06.123 --> 00:02:07.852
Now, look at that.
00:02:07.958 --> 00:02:11.999
That dog is smilin' at me.
00:02:11.001 --> 00:02:13.358
(Miss Franny chuckles)
00:02:13.999 --> 00:02:15.001
Would you like to be friends?
00:02:15.298 --> 00:02:17.999
You and me and Winn-Dixie?
00:02:18.001 --> 00:02:22.001
Would you wanna
be friends?
00:02:22.999 --> 00:02:26.202
Why, that would be fine.
00:02:26.309 --> 00:02:28.001
That would be grand.
00:02:29.987 --> 00:02:30.999
Just grand.
00:02:30.001 --> 00:02:33.001
OPAL:
Winn-Dixie was better
00:02:33.001 --> 00:02:35.001
at makin'friends
than anyone I had ever known.
00:02:35.852 --> 00:02:38.005
I talked to him
about everything.
00:02:38.001 --> 00:02:40.001
And he was
a real good listener.
00:02:40.001 --> 00:02:43.524
(whines)
00:02:43.001 --> 00:02:46.494
Just about everything good
that happened that summer
00:02:46.596 --> 00:02:50.999
happened because of Winn-Dixie.
00:02:50.999 --> 00:02:51.001
(Opal kisses Winn-Dixie)
00:02:52.997 --> 00:02:54.001
(Winn-Dixie grunts)
00:02:54.137 --> 00:02:56.999
(bell dinging)
00:02:56.001 --> 00:02:58.999
(birds chirping softly)
00:03:00.001 --> 00:03:02.997
(bell dinging)
00:03:03.999 --> 00:03:04.001
(birds chirping softly)
00:03:06.991 --> 00:03:10.001
(acoustic guitar plays
slow melody)
