According to Ferdinand Ries,
Beethoven grabs the front page of his symphony,
the autograph score, tears it in half
from top to bottom. There was a manuscript copy, which Beethoven was about to
use for a performance, and it says, "Grand symphony
entitled Bonaparte", and Beethoven scores out
the name of Napoleon so heavily that there's actually
a hole in the paper. Any kind of tyranny,
Beethoven is strongly opposed to. Beethoven needs to mourn
all of the idols, all of the heroes that
he had put up on a pedestal. But, of course, they're just human. You know, Beethoven starts to
search for the spiritual hero, I think, and maybe it's the hero
that's within. MUSIC: Sonata No. 23, Appassionata
