drive each other crazy. Karl is torn between Beethoven's
sometimes smothering affection and episodes of just total neglect. Beethoven hits him, ridicules him,
condemns him and then smothers him. The letter of September 14th, 1825. "This Sunday, you need not come, "for, with your behaviour,
we shall never establish "true agreement and harmony. "Farewell, he who, it is true,
did not give you life, "but certainly maintained it
and undertook the education "of your mind paternally,
more than paternally, "now implores you to keep to
the only true way of goodness "and righteousness. "Farewell."
