I think Beethoven's music
is the essence of the revolutionary thinking
which, of course, swept all of Europe,
starting in Paris, obviously,
in the great French Revolution. This uprising was against
the rule of the aristocracy and the rule of the aristocracy
was strongly connected with music. Beethoven received a lot of help
from aristocratic patrons. You would expect that, if they give
support, you have to return the gesture by composing
something which glorifies them
