In 1794, when Beethoven is 23
and thinks he's 25, he writes a note to himself. "Courage. "In spite of all the weaknesses
of my body, my spirit shall rule. "You are 25. This year
must determine the complete man. "Nothing must remain undone." He already understands that his body
is betraying him - he's had trouble with his gut
from his teens, he's had trouble with depression. He understands also that there's
a self-realisation involved and he's making a vow here, of
the kind that a lot of people make - "It's going to be
different from now on, "this is my New Year's resolution." But when Beethoven writes
things like this, he means them and he acts on them
