and they started applauding. Beethoven was still, with his head
in the score, conducting away. One of the soloists, Caroline Unger, grabbed him and turned him around
so he could see the audience, and he seemed to be confused
because he had been in the middle of the piece somewhere. And then the audience saw this, and they started applauding
louder and louder. And he couldn't hear it. This is one of the saddest moments
in his life, and, also, at the same time, it's one of the

to suffer both pain AND joy. "One might say that the best of us
obtain joy through suffering." And, out of this experience,
he builds a piece that resonates
