Today, it is they who are deprived
of their last possessions and their homes, whose relatives
face an uncertain fate in endless treks and refugee trains. I well know what it means to live
in permanent uncertainty about your nearest and dearest
and all the people close to you in need and misery and hunger
and agony without hearing anything from them. I, we, we Jews, we have long
lived through this. Am I now supposed to feel
pity for them?
