Howard Wilton:
Mrs. Gordon... Mrs. Helen Gordon:
Yes? Howard Wilton:
Have I done anything to hurt you? Mrs. Helen Gordon:
No. Of course you haven't. Howard Wilton:
I'm glad. Because I wouldn't want to hurt you. But I might, you know. Mrs. Helen Gordon:
I don't believe that. You're just not feeling well, that's all. Howard Wilton:
[haltingly]
You don't know what it means... like I do... to find myself in the... middle of a room... the middle of a busy street... or in some house I'm working in. A thing like that happens, I wonder where I am... what I'm doing. And sometimes I'm... I'm looking down at someone... somebody that's been hurt. And they've been hurt very badly. And I wonder if *I've* done it, if what I'm looking at is real or, it's only in my mind. Then I begin to run. I hide. But I don't know what I'm hiding from. It's bad enough to hide, but... not to know what you're hiding from. There are days when I pick up a newspaper, and I see that somebody's been murdered. And I ask myself... could I have been there at that time? Could I have done this thing? Where was I yesterday? What causes these blank spaces? What causes them? Mrs. Helen Gordon:
[frightened]
I don't know... I don't know... I don't know. Perhaps if we get a doctor... [makes a run for the door to get away]

Mrs. Gordon?
00:00:01.502 --> 00:00:02.965
Yes?
00:00:03.000 --> 00:00:04.462
Have I done anything
to hurt you?
00:00:04.497 --> 00:00:06.959
No, of course
you haven't.
00:00:07.457 --> 00:00:09.454
I'm glad.
00:00:09.489 --> 00:00:12.949
Because I wouldn't
want to hurt you.
00:00:12.984 --> 00:00:15.944
But I might,
you know.
00:00:15.979 --> 00:00:18.439
I don't believe that.
00:00:18.474 --> 00:00:20.936
You're just not feeling
well, that's all.
00:00:21.969 --> 00:00:25.928
You don't know what
it means like I do...
00:00:25.963 --> 00:00:27.924
to find myself...
00:00:27.959 --> 00:00:29.921
in the middle
of a room...
00:00:29.956 --> 00:00:33.415
or the middle
of a busy street...
00:00:33.045 --> 00:00:37.908
or in some house
I'm working in.
00:00:37.943 --> 00:00:39.905
When a thing like
that happens...
00:00:39.094 --> 00:00:42.009
I wonder
where I am...
00:00:42.935 --> 00:00:44.897
what I'm doing.
00:00:46.929 --> 00:00:51.386
And sometimes I'm...
looking down at someone...
00:00:51.421 --> 00:00:54.381
somebody that's
been hurt.
00:00:54.416 --> 00:00:57.376
They've been hurt
very badly.
00:00:59.408 --> 00:01:01.037
And I wonder
if I've done it...
00:01:01.405 --> 00:01:03.866
if what I'm looking at
is real or...
00:01:03.901 --> 00:01:06.361
it's only in my mind.
00:01:06.396 --> 00:01:08.858
Then I begin to run.
00:01:08.893 --> 00:01:11.999
I hide.
00:01:11.001 --> 00:01:14.349
But I don't know
what I'm hiding from.
00:01:16.088 --> 00:01:19.084
It's bad enough
to hide, but...
00:01:19.875 --> 00:01:22.336
not to know what
you're hiding from.
00:01:25.999 --> 00:01:28.999
There are days when
I pick up a newspaper
00:01:28.825 --> 00:01:31.821
and I see that somebody's been murdered.
00:01:31.999 --> 00:01:34.316
And I ask myself...
00:01:34.351 --> 00:01:37.001
could I have been there at that time?
00:01:37.346 --> 00:01:38.809
Could I have done
this thing?
00:01:38.999 --> 00:01:41.001
Where was I
yesterday?
00:01:41.034 --> 00:01:43.801
What causes
these blank spaces?
00:01:43.836 --> 00:01:46.297
What causes them?
00:01:46.999 --> 00:01:48.001
I don't know.
00:01:49.292 --> 00:01:52.047
I don't know.
00:01:54.319 --> 00:01:58.277
Perhaps- perhaps if
we get a doctor.
00:02:00.001 --> 00:02:03.001
I told you,
I've had enough of doctors.
00:02:03.001 --> 00:02:05.001
Just tell me one thing-
00:02:05.301 --> 00:02:07.762
do you know what started
things going wrong this morning?
00:02:07.797 --> 00:02:08.761
No, I don't.
00:02:08.999 --> 00:02:11.256
I remember something
about a man being here.
00:02:11.291 --> 00:02:12.999
Was there a man here?
00:02:12.999 --> 00:02:13.999
Yes.
00:02:13.001 --> 00:02:14.251
What was his name?
00:02:14.286 --> 00:02:15.025
Mr. Armstrong.
He rooms here.
00:02:15.749 --> 00:02:17.001
Oh, yes. I remember.
00:02:18.245 --> 00:02:19.999
He's the one
who started it all.
00:02:19.999 --> 00:02:20.001
What do you mean?
00:02:20.001 --> 00:02:22.738
I was coming up
the walk...
00:02:22.773 --> 00:02:24.001
there was a dog
barking...
00:02:24.001 --> 00:02:26.999
and he was standing
right here.
00:02:26.999 --> 00:02:28.001
He was laughing at me.
00:02:28.001 --> 00:02:29.227
He wasn't.
00:02:29.727 --> 00:02:30.999
Really, he wasn't.
00:02:30.999 --> 00:02:31.001
Oh, yes, he was,
and you know he was.
00:02:31.001 --> 00:02:33.022
Howard, you're
imagining things.
00:02:33.255 --> 00:02:36.215
No. He had a suitcase in his hand
and his overcoat over his arm.
00:02:38.001 --> 00:02:39.001
Where are you going?
00:02:40.744 --> 00:02:44.203
To let him in,
of course.
00:02:44.999 --> 00:02:48.196
He can't harm you.
Please, Howard.
00:02:48.999 --> 00:02:50.001
All right.
00:02:58.215 --> 00:02:59.678
Where's the key?
00:02:59.999 --> 00:03:01.001
Wherever you put it,
I suppose.
00:03:01.001 --> 00:03:04.999
I never lock the doors from
the inside during the daytime.
