windswept minstrel, that was the thing for me. It's not something you hear very
often, he was a great banjo player,
by the way. But he was, he was
mean on the banjo. And much to my delight, I wasn't
the only one thinking like this. He wasn't particularly
unusual on the folk scene, because there was a lot of shaggy
men with big beards, there was a lot of
humour around as well. Glaswegian working-class kids
with ambitions to do something, anything different from what
had gone on before them, were finding each other. We were all cheering
each other on to become playwrights, musicians,
and painters. And that's how I came
into the orbit of Scotland's favourite artist, John Byrne
