While I was trying to play
the banjo and get famous and be a somebody,
Gerry was writing songs, because he had to. John was painting
for his own reasons. And it was all very natural. Guys who were playing and trying
to make something of themselves, meeting, and being so
pleased with each other, and recognising things in each
other that they had in common. But, you know, there are various
rungs on the ladder you do, you don't know they're rungs
until you've done them. But being accepted by these
guys was spectacular, being so spectacularly accepted
by them was amazing. But I remember thinking,
"Oh, God! I've done myself a bit
of good here."
