And the civil rights movement
was no different! We were glad to be a part of it
and it wouldn't have happened without us. But it came with the cost of us
missing out on the feminist movement, because they happened at the same time,
so we had to make a choice. Were we going to be black
or were we going to be women? And when our sons, brothers and fathers
were being hosed down in the streets, it wasn't that hard of a choice to make. And thank God we made that choice because we carried the weight
of that movement on our backs, which is what we always do. We've always had to take care
of everyone else. We've always had to be pragmatic
even when we're dreaming. It's fucking exhausting. For white women,
the idea of being a kept woman has been around
since the beginning of time, but don't let it happen with us. We get lucky enough to marry someone
who wants to take care of us, and it's "Oh, my God! It's a black woman someone wants to love and take care of.
Give me a camera!" Next thing you know,
there's like seven TV shows about it. So you want to know why I'm going to take
my second act now? I'm gonna tell you why

And the civil rights movement
was no different!
00:00:03.586 --> 00:00:06.839
We were glad to be a part of it
and it wouldn't have happened without us.
00:00:06.922 --> 00:00:09.842
But it came with the cost of us
missing out on the feminist movement,
00:00:09.925 --> 00:00:13.047
because they happened at the same time,
so we had to make a choice.
00:00:13.554 --> 00:00:16.348
Were we going to be black
or were we going to be women?
00:00:16.599 --> 00:00:20.394
And when our sons, brothers and fathers
were being hosed down in the streets,
00:00:20.477 --> 00:00:22.479
it wasn't that hard of a choice to make.
00:00:22.563 --> 00:00:24.064
And thank God we made that choice
00:00:24.148 --> 00:00:26.942
because we carried the weight
of that movement on our backs,
00:00:27.026 --> 00:00:28.569
which is what we always do.
00:00:28.652 --> 00:00:31.238
We've always had to take care
of everyone else.
00:00:31.322 --> 00:00:34.366
We've always had to be pragmatic
even when we're dreaming.
00:00:34.045 --> 00:00:35.951
It's fucking exhausting.
00:00:36.997 --> 00:00:38.412
For white women,
the idea of being a kept woman
00:00:38.495 --> 00:00:40.623
has been around
since the beginning of time,
00:00:40.706 --> 00:00:42.291
but don't let it happen with us.
00:00:42.416 --> 00:00:45.169
We get lucky enough to marry someone
who wants to take care of us,
00:00:45.252 --> 00:00:47.421
and it's "Oh, my God! It's a black woman
00:00:47.504 --> 00:00:50.424
someone wants to love and take care of.
Give me a camera!"
00:00:50.507 --> 00:00:53.594
Next thing you know,
there's like seven TV shows about it.
00:00:53.677 --> 00:00:57.681
So you want to know why I'm going to take
my second act now? I'm gonna tell you why.
