Born Free

Elsa, Elsa Let's try this. all my nightmares had come true. ...she can't make it. she...

Joy Adamson: Elsa, Elsa
[Joy cries sitting out on the hood of the truck as they ride in search of the young lioness]
George Adamson: Let's try this.
[2 shots ring out from his gun. George sees Elsa stumbling through the grass, approaching their vehicle]
Joy Adamson: all my nightmares had come true.
[Now Elsa rests in their tent as they argue over her]
George Adamson: ...she can't make it. she can't think. she can't mix with her own kind... She can't do anything the wild animals do to survive. You've done too good a job on her. You've made her tame. It's too late to try to let her go wild now. All we're doing is making her miserable, torturing her. How could you be so cruel?
Joy Adamson: You keep quiet George.
George Adamson: I don't know what goes on in that head of yours anymore... What's wrong with a zoo, anyway?
Joy Adamson: nothing. Except that she won't be free.
George Adamson: and Is freedom so important?
Joy Adamson: yes, yes, she was born free and she has the right to live free. Why don't we live in a more comfortable setting George? Other people do. We chose to live out here cause it represents freedom for us. Because we can breathe.
George Adamson: Joy, tell me the truth. You just don't want to give her up. What you're really hoping is that she can stay out here, wild, but not too wild. That you can see her every now and then.
Joy Adamson: it's not the whole truth. But I don't deny I'd like it.
George Adamson: it's impossible. It cannot happen.
Joy Adamson: ...at least she would be free. At least she wouldn't be in a cage for the rest of her life.
George Adamson: even if she gets herself killed in the process.
Joy Adamson: [stroking Elsa's leg] I'd never forgive myself I suppose.
[Joy narrates]
Joy Adamson: although at one time we were afraid she'd die, Elsa did recover. And when she did, she seemed somehow different

You've done too good a job on her
00:00:58.307 --> 00:01:02.653
We've made her tame and it's too late to try to let her go wild now
00:01:02.728 --> 00:01:07.404
All we're doing is making her miserable torturing her
00:01:07.483 --> 00:01:11.488
How can you be so cruel Do you think I enjoy it
00:01:11.999 --> 00:01:15.575
Exhales I don't know what goes on in that head of yours anymore
00:01:15.658 --> 00:01:19.504
You have this fixed idea What's wrong with a zoo anyway
00:01:19.578 --> 00:01:21.751
Nothing except that she won't be free
00:01:21.831 --> 00:01:24.584
Yes And is freedom so important
00:01:26.994 --> 00:01:30.465
Yes She was born free and she has the right to live free
00:01:30.548 --> 00:01:34.001
Why don't we live in some nice comfortable city George Other people do
00:01:34.004 --> 00:01:37.002
But we've chosen to live here because it represents freedom for us
00:01:37.001 --> 00:01:40.233
Because we can breathe here So could she be That's because we're fit for it
00:01:40.307 --> 00:01:43.999
She can She can She'll be safe in the zoo
00:01:43.185 --> 00:01:49.158
Yes safe And fat and lazy and dull and stupid like some cow on a milking machine
00:01:50.151 --> 00:01:52.529
Joy
00:01:52.611 --> 00:01:55.999
Tell me the truth You just don't want to give her up
00:01:55.999 --> 00:01:58.999
What you're really hoping is that she can stay out here
00:01:58.001 --> 00:02:02.505
wild but not too wild so that you can see her every now and then
00:02:02.058 --> 00:02:05.459
That's it isn't it It's not the whole truth
00:02:06.005 --> 00:02:08.999
but I don't deny I'd like it
00:02:08.001 --> 00:02:11.999
It's impossible
00:02:11.547 --> 00:02:14.517
It can't happen Even if she should be able to go wild
00:02:14.001 --> 00:02:17.001
which I very much doubt that would be the end
00:02:17.762 --> 00:02:20.001
You'd never see her again Then at least she'd be free
00:02:20.001 --> 00:02:23.999
At least she wouldn't be in a cage for the rest of her life
00:02:23.392 --> 00:02:26.999
And if she gets herself killed in the process
00:02:26.001 --> 00:02:30.001
Elsa Rumbling
00:02:40.999 --> 00:02:43.333
I'd never forgive myself I suppose
00:02:43.001 --> 00:02:49.909
Panting
00:02:49.008 --> 00:02:54.999
