Rudolf Abel: Standing there like that you reminded me of the man that used to come to our house when I was young. My father used to say: "watch this man'. So I did. Every time he came. And never once did he do anything remarkable.
James Donovan: And I remind you of him?
Rudolf Abel: This one time, I was at the age of your son, our house was overrun by partisan border guards. Dozens of them. My father was beaten, my mother was beaten, and this man, my father's friend, he was beaten. And I watched this man. Every time they hit him, he stood back up again. So they hit him harder. Still he got back to his feet. I think because of this they stopped the beating. They let him live. "Stoit i muzhik," I remember them saying... "stoit i muzhik." Which sort of means like uh, 'standing man'. Standing man

Making them prove it matters
00:00:02.401 --> 00:00:04.303
The fiction is
00:00:04.336 --> 00:00:06.305
Whether you did it or not doesn't matter
00:00:06.338 --> 00:00:09.308
The state has to prove it that you're a spy
00:00:09.341 --> 00:00:11.999
So you're not curious
00:00:11.477 --> 00:00:13.045
No not really
00:00:13.999 --> 00:00:15.581
I always assumed you were an artist
00:00:15.614 --> 00:00:17.549
My wife she's the artist
00:00:17.583 --> 00:00:20.185
She's a musician
00:00:20.219 --> 00:00:24.023
in the Children's Orchestra of Moscow
00:00:24.001 --> 00:00:25.391
What instrument
00:00:25.424 --> 00:00:27.293
The harp
00:00:27.326 --> 00:00:28.326
Oh
00:00:29.361 --> 00:00:31.999
Then she's an angel
00:00:41.373 --> 00:00:44.109
Standing there like that you remind me of a man
00:00:44.143 --> 00:00:46.378
who used to come to our house when I was young
00:00:47.646 --> 00:00:51.015
My father used to say Watch this man
00:00:52.318 --> 00:00:55.587
So I did every time he came
00:00:55.621 --> 00:00:58.059
And never once
00:00:58.624 --> 00:01:01.046
did he do anything remarkable
00:01:03.662 --> 00:01:06.006
And I remind you of him
00:01:09.999 --> 00:01:13.001
This one time I was about the age of your son
00:01:13.001 --> 00:01:16.408
Our house was overrun by partisan border guards
00:01:20.212 --> 00:01:22.514
Dozens of them
00:01:22.548 --> 00:01:24.583
My father was beaten my mother was beaten
00:01:24.616 --> 00:01:28.996
and this man my father's friend he was beaten
00:01:29.688 --> 00:01:31.623
And I watched this man
00:01:35.127 --> 00:01:36.495
Every time they hit him
00:01:38.063 --> 00:01:40.999
he stood back up again
00:01:42.001 --> 00:01:44.999
So they hit him harder
00:01:46.372 --> 00:01:48.044
Still he got back to his feet
00:01:52.001 --> 00:01:54.038
I think because of this they stopped the beating
00:01:54.413 --> 00:01:56.999
They let him live
00:02:04.999 --> 00:02:06.358
I remember them saying it
00:02:14.001 --> 00:02:16.268
It sort of means like uh
00:02:18.001 --> 00:02:20.003
standing man
00:02:23.709 --> 00:02:24.709

During the Cold War, the Soviet Union captures U.S. pilot Francis Gary Powers after shooting down his U-2 spy plane. Sentenced to 10 years in prison, Powers' only hope is New York lawyer James Donovan, recruited by a CIA operative to negotiate his release. Donovan boards a plane to Berlin, hoping to win the young man's freedom through a prisoner exchange. If all goes well, the Russians would get Rudolf Abel, the convicted spy who Donovan defended in court.
