of almost civil war. Different groups of armed Red Guards
were fighting running battles with each other
in all the major cities. But Jiang Qing still believed that real power
was almost within her grasp. She had destroyed the one man
who was seen as Mao's successor, Liu Shaoqi. CHANTING Red Guards took Liu from his house, and he was beaten up
and imprisoned. Everyone, including children, were told that he, too, was a demon
