The new light
worked like this: up three tubes came alcohol,
hydrogen, and oxygen. these were sprayed
on to a piece of limestone, and ignited. Behind the limestone,
a curved reflector; as the flames
heated up the limestone, it would glow
brighter and brighter until in the end,
it would become incandescent
