the history of the village was catching sardines. The reason why Mevagissey exists is
because the sardines come into Mevagissey Bay to spawn. Many of the old buildings
in the village were used to process sardines. They were salted and exported
to Spain and Italy. The whole village is there. Its fundamental reason why it exists
is because of the sardine fishing. But it died away a bit. They were once known as pilchards,
and Meva canned them in their millions. But stocks were hammered and the
pilchard went out of fashion
