This is taking the fish
directly from the boats, we're loading it into a hopper, we're doing circa one tonne an hour,
or 14,000 sardines. Within 24 hours,
they would have been caught, processed and left the country. Since its resurgence
in the early 2000s, the fishery has grown into
a multi-million-pound industry. Now the pilchards are sold fresh, and have been rebranded
as Cornish sardines. Yeah, I get told off if
I call a pilchard a sardine, with my grandparents,
I do get told off for that. I still call them pilchards. But from a marketing point of view
on the Continent, you can sell sardines a lot better
