of the pretrial hearing was established early
by the demonstrators outside circling the criminal
court building which houses the state's
Supreme Court chambers. Ironically, the crowd... [Jamal] So, the beginning months
of the trial were pretrial hearings, which started ten months
after the arrests. We were all in prison, and we were separated. I was on Rikers Island, Lumumba and the others
were in the Tombs. Afeni and Joan were at
the Women's House of Detention. [Afeni] I hate prison. I hate going to prison. I hate the sound of the first
door when it closes. [Gloria] The first time
I went to see Afeni was the first time
I had ever been in a jail. She was defiant. [Afeni] When all these bars
that intrude within my sight, these shivering lines that test
my physical might. She did not cry
