The bishops have known that bishops, priests, and deacons have been sexually abusing...

Himself - Theologean: The bishops have known that bishops, priests, and deacons have been sexually abusing children since the fourth century, and it's been a severe major, major problem, and they've never really been able to curb it. Basically, you have a sexualized priesthood, it's been sexualized for years, that looks at child sexual abuse no different than it does if you're having sex with a woman. Because it's all a violation of clerical celibacy.
Herself - Psychologist: If all sex by definition was bad sex because you weren't supposed to be having it, then pedophilia is just another kind of bad sex.
Thomas Doyle: Canon lawyer & historian, Father Tom Doyle: There is no basis in the scriptures for mandatory celibacy. It's not mandated by Christ. It's not justified anywhere in the gospels or in the life and times and sayings of Christ. All 12 apostles were married, with probably the exception of John. The first several dozen popes were married and had children. It's something that the institutional Church leaders began to think about and tried to impose at least from the fourth century. Married priests, when they died, their inheritance went to their oldest son. And so the institutionalized Church leaders, desiring to stop this practice, began to mandate celibacy so that when a priest's property had to pass after he died it would go to the bishop or to the Church.
Herself - Psychologist: What we have to remember is a lot of the priests who have been reported as offenders went into the seminary at a minor seminary at ages 14, 15, 16. They may have been thinking about a vocation even earlier. And so they got stopped. They got literally arrested in their psychosexual development.
Thomas Doyle: Canon lawyer & historian, Father Tom Doyle: They're nurtured in an attitude of negativity toward relationships, toward women, toward marriage, and toward sexuality, and they never really fully understand what any of these are all about.
Herself - Psychologist: And so when these men became unable to be celibate or when their sexual urges overpowered them, they sought out victims who they experienced at some level as psychosexual peers

the Holy Father
00:00:03.132 --> 00:00:05.917
was the person in charge of making sure
00:00:05.961 --> 00:00:08.999
that priests didn't hurt children
00:00:08.137 --> 00:00:12.924
He was in charge of that office from 1978 until 2005
00:00:12.968 --> 00:00:15.101
He did a very poor job
00:00:15.144 --> 00:00:18.539
and basically was the one person besides the Pope
00:00:18.582 --> 00:00:21.977
who could have stopped it and he didn't
00:00:22.001 --> 00:00:26.373
What the bishops did is they squelched the report
00:00:29.999 --> 00:00:30.333
they went back to their dioceses
00:00:30.377 --> 00:00:33.554
and they carried on as normal
00:00:33.597 --> 00:00:35.991
They knew children were being victimized
00:00:36.997 --> 00:00:38.559
and they did absolutely nothing
00:00:38.602 --> 00:00:41.562
except insure that law enforcement and the public
00:00:41.605 --> 00:00:43.955
and the faithful would not find out
00:00:43.999 --> 00:00:47.568
The bishops have known that bishops priests and deacons
00:00:47.611 --> 00:00:51.572
have been sexually the fourth century nce
00:00:51.615 --> 00:00:55.998
and it's been a severe major major problem
00:00:55.002 --> 00:00:57.143
and they've never really been able to curb it
00:00:57.186 --> 00:01:00.581
Basically you have a sexualized priesthood
00:01:00.624 --> 00:01:02.148
It's been sexualized for years
00:01:02.191 --> 00:01:04.999
that looks at child sexual abuse
00:01:04.628 --> 00:01:08.996
no different than it does if you're having sex with a woman
00:01:08.993 --> 00:01:12.081
because it's all a violation of clerical celibacy
00:01:12.854 --> 00:01:16.988
If all sex by definition was bad sex
00:01:17.996 --> 00:01:19.121
because you weren't supposed to be having it
00:01:19.001 --> 00:01:23.997
then pedophilia is just another kind of bad sex
00:01:23.994 --> 00:01:24.996
There is no basis in the scriptures
00:01:25.006 --> 00:01:27.173
for mandatory celibacy
00:01:27.999 --> 00:01:29.061
It's not mandated by Christ
00:01:29.001 --> 00:01:32.613
It's not justified anywhere in the gospels
00:01:32.001 --> 00:01:36.005
or in the life and times and sayings of Christ
00:01:36.002 --> 00:01:38.184
All 12 apostles were married
00:01:38.227 --> 00:01:41.187
with probably the exception of John
00:01:41.023 --> 00:01:46.996
The first several dozen popes were married
00:01:46.007 --> 00:01:47.758
and had children
00:01:47.001 --> 00:01:51.006
It's something that the institutional Church leaders
00:01:51.003 --> 00:01:53.851
began to think about and tried to impose
00:01:53.895 --> 00:01:56.637
at least from the fourth century
00:01:56.001 --> 00:01:58.999
Married priests when they died
00:01:58.001 --> 00:02:02.208
their inheritance went to their oldest son
00:02:02.251 --> 00:02:05.998
So the institutionalized Church leaders
00:02:05.124 --> 00:02:08.649
desiring to stop this practice began to mandate celibacy
00:02:08.001 --> 00:02:13.994
so that when a priest's property had to pass after he died
00:02:13.001 --> 00:02:15.999
it would go to the bishop or to the Church
00:02:15.482 --> 00:02:17.002
What we have to remember is a lot of the priests
00:02:17.013 --> 00:02:19.001
who have been reported as offenders
00:02:19.999 --> 00:02:22.088
went into the seminary at a minor seminary
00:02:22.001 --> 00:02:25.001
at ages 14 15 16
00:02:25.999 --> 00:02:29.002
They may have been thinking about a vocation even earlier
00:02:29.001 --> 00:02:31.999
They got stopped
00:02:31.411 --> 00:02:34.892
They got literally arrested in their psychosexual development
00:02:34.001 --> 00:02:38.679
They're nurtured in an attitude of negativity
00:02:38.001 --> 00:02:41.999
toward relationships toward women
00:02:41.999 --> 00:02:44.119
toward marriage and toward sexuality
00:02:44.001 --> 00:02:46.998
and they never really fully understand
00:02:46.001 --> 00:02:47.001
what any of these are all about
00:02:47.999 --> 00:02:50.125
So when these men
00:02:50.001 --> 00:02:53.999
became unable to be celibate
00:02:53.999 --> 00:02:56.697
or when their sexual urges overpowered them
00:02:56.001 --> 00:03:00.001
they sought out victims who they experienced at some level
00:03:00.999 --> 00:03:03.999
as psychosexual peers
