DR. POWERS: It was not just
a matter of chance that South Carolina was
the first state to secede because they believed that
Lincoln would not reinforce the institution of slavery
and therefore, their lives,
not just their property, but their lives
were jeopardized. DARBY: Charleston is all of that.
Charleston celebrates that. That's why I've called Charleston
a Confederate Disneyland, because people like to come and to see what
it used to be like and have a mint julep
or an iced tea and have somebody black
call them "sir" or "ma'am." That's a part of
Charleston's dark history, but it's a part that still
fuels tourism in Charleston
