Some of the biggest issues
were water damage. There were
several plumbing leaks that caused, essentially,
millions of dollars in damage. [narrator]
The reported problems went much deeper
than the water leaks. [Stefanos]
You have issues
of sway as well. Basically, all buildings sway but when you get
that high up in the air it's really noticeable. Some folks had even told me
that they were
feeling seasick. All tall buildings sway,
it's just a question
of how much and whether the movement
does more than
make you feel queasy. Here there were reports
of it creaking
like a ship at sea with banging noises. [narrator] As if swaying,
creaking, and banging
weren't enough, there was one more
disturbing problem. [Stefanos]
Because of the height
of these towers and the way in which
the building sways
at that height, cables inside
the elevator shaft were sort of slapping
against the side of the shaft and causing the elevator
to stop
