and much of San Francisco Bay's
front land stand on a 19th century solution
to a problem
every coastal city faces, where do you build
when you've run out of space? In the early days
of the Gold Rush, ships docked
at the northeastern tip
of the then small town. But as more space was needed, But as more space was needed, engineers filled
in mudflats to create
a new shoreline stretching
from the Embarcadero
