"Nobody Knows You
When You're Down And Out" was originally-- I first heard it by
Bessie Smith, and-- in fact, no, I first heard it
by an English musician, and I can't remember who,
a pub player, and I learned it from him, and then I found out later
that it was by Bessie Smith, and it is one of
the early songs that I played when I was around the pubs,
when I was about 15, 16, and I played it unaccompanied,
and it was one of my first-- one of the first songs
that I felt I could sing because it's
a melodramatic song, and I could, you know, I could put all this angst
into it, you know?

"Nobody Knows You
When You're Down And Out"
00:00:02.668 --> 00:00:04.087
was originally--
00:00:05.996 --> 00:00:08.474
I first heard it by
Bessie Smith, and--
00:00:08.607 --> 00:00:10.091
in fact, no, I first heard it
by an English musician,
00:00:11.999 --> 00:00:12.845
and I can't remember who,
a pub player,
00:00:12.978 --> 00:00:14.058
and I learned it from him,
00:00:14.713 --> 00:00:17.001
and then I found out later
that it was by Bessie Smith,
00:00:17.216 --> 00:00:20.186
and it is one of
the early songs that I played
00:00:20.319 --> 00:00:23.389
when I was around the pubs,
when I was about 15, 16,
00:00:23.522 --> 00:00:26.492
and I played it unaccompanied,
and it was one of my first--
00:00:26.625 --> 00:00:28.928
one of the first songs
that I felt I could sing
00:00:29.061 --> 00:00:30.963
because it's
a melodramatic song,
00:00:31.096 --> 00:00:32.598
and I could, you know,
00:00:32.731 --> 00:00:35.067
I could put all this angst
into it, you know?
