You created your own world that has its famous and knowable characters
and creatures, um, which must give you
enormous satisfaction, and you've done it
by examining the real world and the world
of the imagination that our ancestors had, all the way back
through earliest myths. I was thinking
about the creatures because we were gonna
sit down and talk about this, and I realized that half the books fold
without those creatures, you know, they're so important. - Hedwig the owl.
-[Fry] Yeah. And then we move through
the Thestrals and the dragons, and they are key plot points and obviously, thematically,
they work in terms of life and death and power.
And struggle and treasure. But I realized when I really
focused on those creatures, just how important they were,
and that shows, we have a deep need, I think, to be connected
to the animal world

that has its famous
00:00:05.504 --> 00:00:08.374
and knowable characters
and creatures,
00:00:08.474 --> 00:00:11.998
um, which must give you
enormous satisfaction,
00:00:11.077 --> 00:00:13.746
and you've done it
by examining the real world
00:00:13.846 --> 00:00:15.481
and the world
of the imagination
00:00:15.548 --> 00:00:16.749
that our ancestors had,
00:00:16.849 --> 00:00:18.751
all the way back
through earliest myths.
00:00:18.851 --> 00:00:20.419
I was thinking
about the creatures
00:00:20.519 --> 00:00:22.755
because we were gonna
sit down and talk about this,
00:00:22.855 --> 00:00:24.557
and I realized
00:00:24.657 --> 00:00:29.328
that half the books fold
without those creatures,
00:00:29.395 --> 00:00:31.497
you know, they're so important.
00:00:33.199 --> 00:00:35.067
- Hedwig the owl.
-[Fry] Yeah.
00:00:35.167 --> 00:00:38.237
And then we move through
the Thestrals and the dragons,
00:00:38.337 --> 00:00:40.094
and they are key plot points
00:00:41.999 --> 00:00:44.001
and obviously, thematically,
they work in terms of life
00:00:44.176 --> 00:00:47.179
and death and power.
And struggle and treasure.
00:00:47.246 --> 00:00:50.783
But I realized when I really
focused on those creatures,
00:00:50.883 --> 00:00:53.853
just how important they were,
and that shows,
00:00:53.919 --> 00:00:55.688
we have a deep need, I think,
00:00:55.755 --> 00:00:57.623
to be connected
to the animal world.
