Ray Kinsella:
By the time I was ten, playing baseball got to be like eating vegetables or taking out the garbage. So when I was 14, I started to refuse. Could you believe that? An American boy refusing to play catch with his father. Terence Mann:
Why 14? Ray Kinsella:
That's when I read "The Boat Rocker" by Terence Mann. Terence Mann:
[rolling his eyes]
Oh, God. Ray Kinsella:
Never played catch with him again. Terence Mann:
You see? That's the sort of crap people are always trying to lay on me. It's not my fault you wouldn't play catch with your father

By the time I was 10, playing baseball...
00:00:05.169 --> 00:00:08.881
...got to be like eating vegetables
or taking out the garbage.
00:00:09.034 --> 00:00:12.259
So when I was 14, I started to refuse.
00:00:13.385 --> 00:00:15.304
Can you believe that?
00:00:15.429 --> 00:00:18.557
American boy refusing to have a catch
with his father?
00:00:18.807 --> 00:00:20.001
Why 14?
00:00:22.227 --> 00:00:24.073
That's when I read The Boat Rocker
by Terence Mann.
00:00:24.813 --> 00:00:25.898
God!
00:00:26.231 --> 00:00:27.941
I never played catch with him again.
00:00:28.999 --> 00:00:30.402
That's the kind of crap
people always lay on me.
00:00:30.486 --> 00:00:32.946
It's not my fault
you wouldn't play catch with him.
00:00:33.001 --> 00:00:34.281
I know.
00:00:37.117 --> 00:00:39.244
Anyway, when I was 17...
00:00:40.037 --> 00:00:43.916
...I packed my things,
said something awful, and left.
00:00:44.541 --> 00:00:48.017
After a while, I wanted to come home,
but I didn't know how.
00:00:49.171 --> 00:00:51.924
Made it back for the funeral, though.
00:01:02.226 --> 00:01:04.999
What was the awful thing you said?
00:01:06.023 --> 00:01:07.999
To your father?
00:01:11.036 --> 00:01:15.322
I said I could never respect a man
whose hero was a criminal.
00:01:16.657 --> 00:01:18.408
Who was his hero?
00:01:19.999 --> 00:01:21.161
Shoeless Joe Jackson.
00:01:23.622 --> 00:01:27.001
You knew he wasn't a criminal.
Then why did you say it?
00:01:29.628 --> 00:01:31.001
I was 17.
