When I was growing up, most people just didn't
pay much attention to food. Today, food is as important as art
and books and movies and music. It is a huge part
of popular culture. People often ask me today if I think
there's too much emphasis on food. And you know what? My answer is no.
There was too little. [narrator] You've heard
of the art of cooking. Well, here's an artist at work. [Ruth] When I was growing up, it was probably the only
time in human history where people willfully
chose not to pay attention to where their food came from, how they were eating, what
it meant to their bodies. The consequences
have been horrendous. I didn't mean to be
unkind to mother, but she did spend an awful
lot of time in that kitchen
