The federal government had forced over 500 Chiricahua to take up residence within Turkey Creek's narrow borders. Corn was the main crop, but the land was not fertile enough for them to be self-sufficient. The Chiricahua had become dependent upon monthly allotments of government supplies for their well-being Geronimo:
