Lincoln's election, South Caroline calls
for a secession convention, and on December the 20th, 1860, they pull themselves
out of the Union. Mississippi and Florida
are the second and third states to follow. By February 1861,
seven deep Southern states have left the union to form
the Confederate States. Four additional states
will leave after the firing on Fort Sumter. ‐ When Southern coastal
states seceded, they considered all
of the forts property of the Confederacy
