pushed off Pittsburg Landing. They're still holding on
to that strip of ground, and what's more,
across the river Don Carlos Buell
is finally starting to arrive and there are federal gunboats
out on the river whose shells are keeping the Confederates
at bay in the darkness. ‐ But there were a number of
Union officers coming to Grant that night saying,
"Let's get out of here." ‐ Grant is almost
defeated on the first day, almost driven back
into the river, and this is where you see Grant
at his most indomitable, in a sense‐‐most determined,
most imperturbable
