painted a picture of Grant mounted on horseback, and in his mouth
is the stub of a cigar. As this was the first great
Northern victory of the Civil War, fans‐‐ admirers‐‐
sent him 5,000 cigars, and so he started
smoking these things, and Grant would smoke
upwards of 20 of these a day. ‐ For Grant,
the first year goes good. If there's a rookie
of the year for the Union side, it's Ulysses S. Grant. Nobody's wining
