and so his father is able to get Grant
an appointment to West Point, but he'd applied, apparently,
without Grant knowing, and so when the notice
came of the appointment, his father says
to Ulysses that, "You've got the appointment," and Grant's response was,
"The appointment to what?" He goes, "Well, to West Point.
You're going to West Point." ‐ And Grant said,
"I don't really think so," and his father says,
"Yes‐‐yes, you are," and he ends up going, but Grant emphatically
did not want to be a soldier
