There had been three general
officers inside Fort Donelson, John Floyd,
Gideon Pillow, and Grant's old friend,
Simon Bolivar Buckner. But when the idea comes
to surrender, Floyd says, "There is nobody
in the Confederacy that they want worse than me," and so he says,
"I'm not surrendering," and he'll get out of Dodge. The second in command
is Gideon Pillow. He thinks he's the greatest
military commander ever, and Pillow says, "They want me as well,
so I'm not surrendering," so he gets out as well,
turning the command over to the third in command,
Simon Buckner. ‐ Surrender
was the proper thing. I rode to Buckner's
headquarters. [door opening] [door closing] General Buckner
