Sr., have tried to erase him. In 1988,soon after the
conviction of Sam Gillis, Erie Harbor resident Al
Wergeles, aka Birdman, brought Sheriff Briggs a
videotapeof Richie Fife's abduction. According to his daughter, Kathryn, Sheriff Briggs watched
this tapeand threw it away. Kathryn brought it to her
mom, Annemarie Briggs, who kept it for decades and never had the
courageto do what was right. That is until last year, when
Annemarie was battling cancer. She gave the tape to Penny Gillis. Annemarie did not want to leave this world knowing that her husbandhad
put an innocent man in prison
