people drove through the streets surrounding
the block square compound with this message "Stop the shooting. If Iranians try to take over
the American Embassy the Americans will then have
an excuse to turn their guns on us." Khomeini people formed
a human chain across the intersection to keep gun-toting,
curious Iranians out of the area. Soon, the pro-Khomeini types who did not want the Embassy
to be overrun were able to take control
of the situation
