There's been a serious drop
in public support for President Carter's
handling of the hostage crisis and it didn't happen overnight. The poll shows 49% of those surveyed believe the President's efforts to end the crisis
have been a failure. If you were President Carter what would your decision be concerning Iran and the presence of hostages
in that country? I think, you know, it's time to land
30,000 Marines on the shore of Iran and go in and take
over the American property which the US Embassy is. Well, why not? Plain and simply,
the President's advisors feel that military intervention
would be the surest way of getting the hostages killed. Nightline was very popular,
had a big audience and it was having a big impact
on the American public
