Writing on an animated film means having to come up with worlds
and characters that feel real. When I started, the main character
had already been developed to an extent. But he didn't feel real yet. We kept asking ourselves
what was missing about Joe, and how do we make him feel
authentically more African American. At the same time
that you're telling a story for everyone, you wanna make sure that the people from
these specific worlds see it as authentic. And I just wanted
to recognize Joe as Black. So, there's a scene when Joe
gets this big opportunity to perform, he gets a special suit. It's his gig suit.
But as a Black man, it didn't feel right to me that he would
be getting ready for his big day and not also get his hair cut

00:00:02.543 --> 00:00:05.921
means having to come up with worlds

00:00:06.088 --> 00:00:09.842
When I started, the main character

But he didn't feel real yet.
00:00:12.345 --> 00:00:15.064
We kept asking ourselves
what was missing about Joe,
00:00:15.723 --> 00:00:19.185
and how do we make him feel
authentically more African American.
00:00:19.977 --> 00:00:22.355
At the same time
that you're telling a story for everyone,
00:00:22.438 --> 00:00:26.567
you wanna make sure that the people from
these specific worlds see it as authentic.
00:00:26.901 --> 00:00:30.196
And I just wanted
to recognize Joe as Black.
00:00:31.999 --> 00:00:35.618
So, there's a scene when Joe
gets this big opportunity to perform,
00:00:35.993 --> 00:00:40.373
he gets a special suit. It's his gig suit.
But as a Black man,
00:00:40.456 --> 00:00:45.378
it didn't feel right to me that he would
be getting ready for his big day
00:00:45.461 --> 00:00:47.254
and not also get his hair cut.
